What is a Don of Notre Dame?
Our first principal, the Reverend James d'Autremont, CSC chose the nickname "Dons" because of its Spanish translation of "gentleman". In an attempt to avoid an animal nickname, Father d'Autremont
preferred his students to be referred to as the Dons of Notre Dame, or " Gentlemen of Mary."
