Supplies

All Notre Dame students who are taking any course in mathematics should prepare themselves by purchasing the following equipment and bringing it with them to class on the first day.

  • A hardcover three-ring binder large enough to hold two spiral notebooks at the same time (a 2-in. binder will usually do)
  • 2 ruled spiral notebooks with a 3-hole punch. One will be for taking notes; the other will be for doing homework. (A student should expect to fill about three of each during the semester)
  • A fabric or plastic pencil case with a 3-hole punch. This case will be used for carrying pencils, erasers and drawing equipment, and should be large enough to hold a hand calculator (if kept in the case, it is very hard to steal a calculator!)
  • Many pencils and erasers
  • For Geometry students: a compass, protractor and ruler (a 6-inch ruler will fit in the case; a 12-in. ruler with 3-hole punch can be secured in the binder. Either is fine.)
  • A graphing calculator. The preferred calculator is the TI83+ model currently selling for around $78 at Target. Other acceptable calculators are the TI83, TI84 and TI84+.

The TI86 and TI89 are fine if you already have one but are really too sophisticated and expensive to buy brand new. The TI92 and TI92+ should NOT be used.

If you intend to buy a calculator from a different manufacturer, please check with Mr. John Bachta, Math Department Chairperson, before purchasing.
