Physical Education I

Full Year

An introductory study of, and active participation in, the following areas: strength training, physical fitness, wrestling, track and field, golf, soccer, football, basketball, volleyball, softball, and ultimate Frisbee.

Physical Education II

Grade: 10
Credit: 0.25
One Semester

This course is a semester-long sophomore elective. This course continues the study of various topics from Physical Education I, such as basketball, volleyball, strength training, golf, softball and physical fitness. Additionally, students will participate in activities such as badminton, pickleball, table tennis, floor hockey, and flickerball.

Health Education

This course is intended to increases students' awareness in the areas of: wellness, suicide prevention, personality and psychological traits, mental disorders, stress management, drug, alcohol and tobacco abuse, infectious and noninfectious diseases, AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases, first aid and CPR.

Weight Training

One Semester

This course is an introduction to weight training and physical fitness principles. Activities are designed to promote muscular strength, endurance, aerobic fitness, and flexibility. Emphasis is placed upon the importance of each exercise and what muscles are targeted. The main goal of this course is to assist students in developing lifelong fitness skills.

Junior Leaders

Full Year

This is the first section of a two-year commitment in the Physical Education Leaders Program. The goal of this course is to enhance students' leadership skills and allow for opportunities to utilize those skills. Juniors will become proficient in the skills of all physical education activities. Emphasis is placed on the rules and philosophies governing each activity in an effort to increase students' proficiency in officiating each activity. Challenge education is introduced in order to improve problem solving and team-building skills. Journaling is a requirement.

Prerequisites: Teacher recommendation and a minimum of a 3.2 average in physical education classes in the first two years

Senior Leaders

Grade: 12
Credit: 1.00
Full Year

Utilizing skills from the Junior Leaders course, senior students will assist the cooperating teacher in leading calisthenics, assisting in team-building and physical education games, and officiating activities for freshman and sophomore physical education classes.

Prerequisites: Successful completion of Junior Leaders Program and/or departmental approval

Driver Education

Grade: 10, 11, 12
Credit: None
One semester

This course is offered through an independent driving school. Instructors come on campus before and after school to offer the classroom instruction. Behind the wheel instruction is arranged through a student's study hall or free period or outside of regular school hours. Tuition, established by the driving school, is paid directly to the driving school.

Prerequisites: Students must meet all of the State of Illinois requirements and any requirements established by the driving school.
